Same-Sex Partner Visas

The UK recognises and protects the rights of same-sex couples under its immigration laws. The Same-Sex Partner Visa allows individuals in a genuine, long-term relationship with a British citizen or settled person to live and build a future together in the UK—regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

Who Is the Same-Sex Partner Visa For?

The Same-Sex Partner Visa is for individuals who are in a genuine and subsisting relationship with a British citizen, someone with Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), settled status, or refugee/humanitarian protection in the UK.

To qualify, the couple must either:

  • Be in a civil partnership or marriage; or

  • Have lived together for at least 2 years in a relationship akin to marriage or civil partnership.

Other key requirements include:

  • Financial Requirement – A minimum annual income of £29,000 (as of April 2024), or adequate savings.

  • English Language Requirement – The applicant must demonstrate English proficiency through an approved test or qualification.

  • Accommodation Requirement – There must be suitable accommodation in the UK without relying on public funds.

The visa is granted for 2.5 years and is extendable. After 5 years, the applicant may be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and eventually British citizenship.
